Scaling Solar-Powered Energy Grids Across the DRC

DEVELOPMENT  |  June 2026

Across the Democratic Republic of Congo, millions of people live without reliable access to electricity. The FLMH Foundation's solar initiative is changing that — one community at a time. Our clean energy grids are not just powering homes; they are powering schools, clinics, and small businesses that form the backbone of local economies.

Why Solar?

The DRC receives an average of 5.5 peak sun hours per day — making it one of the most solar-rich countries in Africa. Yet less than 20% of the population has access to electricity. Solar micro-grids offer a decentralized, cost-effective, and sustainable solution that doesn't depend on expensive national grid infrastructure.

Our Impact So Far

Since launching the program in 2024, we have installed solar grids in 14 villages across Kinshasa and Kongo Central provinces, directly benefiting over 8,000 households. Local entrepreneurs now operate evening businesses. Children study after dark. Health centers can refrigerate vaccines and run medical equipment.

What Comes Next

Phase 2 of the program targets Lualaba and North Kivu provinces, with a budget of $250,000 and a goal of reaching 25 additional communities by the end of 2026. We are actively seeking strategic partners and donors to help us scale this initiative further.
